Ever since its inception in the 1940s, SMEG has been a style leader.

Located in the same region of Italy as iconic designers, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace, SMEG’s motto is ‘technology with style’. Back in the era when appliances were considered to be nothing more than utilitarian workhorses, SMEG was creating ovens, cooktops and dishwashers that not only worked perfectly, but improved the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen.

The same is especially true today, with the kitchen becoming the focal point of the home, rather than a dingy room hidden from view.

Now more than ever, people are looking for kitchen appliances that fulfil a practical function while also enhancing the décor.

Enter: the SMEG FAB fridge

Designed to emulate the groovy refrigerators of yesteryear, these fridges give you ample storage space, superior temperature control, adjustable glass shelving and a chromed wine bottle holder – among other things.

Plus they’re available in a rainbow of colours, from red, silver and black, to mint green, rose pink, as well as special edition FAB fridges featuring the Australian flag, or even denim!

This SMEG fridge was a hit with Aussies during the Olympics!

The limited edition SMEG Demin fridge was unveiled at this year's EuroCucina

And to complete the look, you can also get a SMEG FAB dishwasher in a range of vivid colours:

…and now the FAB fridge is available in a smaller size – perfect for your home bar area:

SMEG retro appliances are a favourite of interior designs such as Peter Latemore:

“No one wants to poke about in a dingy kitchen while the rest of the family is in another room. So it’s important that you’re comfortable and that you enjoy being there.”

The SMEG FAB fridge has also been used by artist Stuart Semple in his installation It’s Hard to be a Saint in this City:

“There’s something so gorgeous about Smeg fridges, they are just iconic in every way, they just personify refrigerator, they are timeless. I’ve always loved them, there’s something strangely nostalgic about them too.”

Some photos from Semple’s exhibition:

Louise is a writer with a passion for appliances, especially those that involve food. She is particularly fond of ovens because they enable her to make cake. Apart from baking Louise also enjoys listening to alternative music, dying her hair various unnatural colours and writing poetry that has been described (by her Nan) as 'quite nice'. On her appliance wish list is a Hello Kitty toaster and 'Hero' the barking dog-shaped hot dog maker. She lives in Sydney. Google+
