Wedding gift ideas – can appliances make good presents?
March 3rd, 2014
A couple of weekends ago, I watched my cousin get married. They had a great day for it, and despite all of the drama and hassle that comes with organising a wedding, everything went smoothly and according to plan.
But it got me thinking – what appliances make the best wedding gifts?
Generally, it’s a good idea to think small. It’s not that a newlywed couple couldn’t use a large appliance – they’d probably welcome it – but getting just the right one to suit their particular needs may be a bit tricky, especially if you’re trying to keep it a surprise.
So instead, think about one of the many small appliances that people will find handy, but won’t necessarily overwhelm the entire house.
Here are a few wedding present ideas:
Steam Generator System
Yes, as gifts go, it’s not very exciting. But it is very useful! Most homes could make good use of a steam generator to keep all of the laundry fresh – just make sure that the ironing duties are fairly distributed between the couple!
If one or more members of the household wouldn’t know what to do with one of these, point them to our blog, How to iron – top tips for the laundry – it’s never too late to learn!
Microwave
Compact, shiny, ideal for reheating easy meals – microwaves are perfect for worn-out couples recuperating after the stress of a wedding!
Just make sure they’re not so tired that they put something in there that they really shouldn’t…
Sound System
A wedded home should be filled with love and life, and what better way to sort that out than with music? A good audio system can fill a home with good vibes, and a soundbar system as seen above can also provide a more cinematic experience for the TV.

PVR
If this couple, as Aerosmith put it, don’t wanna miss a thing, then adding a PVR to their life could save them a lot of hassles further down the track. With some models being capable of recording two different shows while you watch a third, arguments over what to watch will be a thing of the past.
Headphones
Even the most blissfully wedded couples don’t agree on everything, so if one or the other needs a break from the other’s music or TV viewing choices, a set of soundproof wireless headphones could be just the thing.
Juicer
A good marriage is a combination of the best traits of two individuals, creating a partnership that’s infinitely greater than either person, without either one losing their individual uniqueness.
Likewise, a great juicer can combine the great taste and nutrition of a variety of fruits and vegetables, while maintaining their strong individual flavours.
Use the gift of a slow press juicer to keep the goodness in the juice, as well as the marriage. For more information to help you choose, check out our quick guide to juicers!
Coffee Machine
Maintaining a strong relationship takes a lot of mental energy, and sometimes that extra caffeine kick can be a real help during stressful and tiring times.
The gift of a coffee machine can make it easier for tired human beings to tolerate each other’s foibles first thing in the morning when the mental defences are down. And of course, coffee can help the couple make a statement about themselves with every brew…
Kettle/toaster combo
The toaster and kettle are classic examples of Boring Wedding Gifts, but they don’t have to be. By choosing appliances with great-looking designs that fit the personality and style of the couple in question, you can help them make a statement with every breakfast.
Morphy Richards is usually the go-to brand for cool-looking breakfast appliances, including toasters and kettles that can help bring the 60’s into the kitchen. Though DeLonghi also offer some very nice breakfast appliances…
Bread maker
A shared interest or hobby is a great way for a couple to bond with one another, so why not encourage them to have a go at baking with a bread maker? Especially if you may get to sample the delicious end result of their experimentation…

Slow cooker
It takes time to create a successful marriage, with a lot of elements stewing for a while until they’re just right. So why not go for the gift of a slow cooker?
They’re great in the winter or on rainy days, just like a good relationship is worthwhile during the tough times.
Dehydrator or Vacuum Sealer
Like a good relationship, good food should be savoured. And that means it needs to be saved, and experienced again when the time is right.
A food dehydrator or vacuum sealer allows you to keep food for longer, making a good thing last much longer than a fleeting moment. Plus, a vacuum sealer is the first step towards learning the very cool style of sous vide cooking!
Portable Air Conditioner or Fan
A marriage must endure both good times and bad, so it’s only fair that a household should be prepared to face all seasons. And what better way to keep the climate tolerable than with a portable air conditioner? Reverse cycle models are the best bet, as they heat as well as cool, much like the yin and yang of a successful partnership.
A fan is a simple way to cool off, and the bladeless Dyson designs are a very chic addition to the home, with some designs also providing heating in the cool winter time.
BBQ
Everyone loves a BBQ, right? The Weber Baby Q is the adorably-sized model that can be useful in any size of household, while the larger Family Q is ideal for couples thinking of expanding the nest…
